Technology Inquiry Wiki

Screencast

This was by far the hardest task we have had in class to date. I got frustrated not only with the gathering of the information but also on the format of the page. This works nothing like a word document. The page kept disagreeing with me and I about threw my computer across the room. If i didn't love Amelia ( my computer's name) with a passion I WOULD have done it. I even talked to other people working on their wiki's and they were contemplating not doing it. After putting in about 10 hours working on it and making it good enough for me to turn in, I was relieved. I only hope it is up to professor Boyer's standards. The information was not hard to find. I loved loved loved google scholar. The hard part was figuring out what I thought was the most important. I feel happy with my final product, and I have a little bit more security in potentially making a wiki in the future, but this is definitely some I will need to continue working on to perfect.

What can I even say about how this will affect me in the future. Well now I know the basics of a wiki, and from what everyone appears to be telling us, a wiki is a very important thing to understand how to use. I know more time will need to be put into understanding the best practices, but once I do understand it, I would love to use it in my classroom. SO MUCH MORE RESEARCH!!!! i need to start watching lynda.com to figure out how to use these things. WHEW!

Interactive Whiteboard Lesson

The interactve whiteboard lesson appeared daunting when I first saw it. I thoguht to myself: How on earth am I going to figure this crazy contraption out??? little did I know that with the basics that professor boyer would teach us, it would not be a difficult task to undertake. As soon as I started, I knew I wanted to focus on something that would educate the younger grades. So, I looked in the teaching standards and found something that seemed developmentally appropriate for first graders. I decided on understanding that things can be sorted into categories. My first draft was a little rough around the edges but understandable. So after I got my feedback, I really took a hold of that IWB and combed those knots right out of the mess. My final outcome is something I am still impressed that  made. I am excited to share this information with my peers, and I hope that they will  possibly use this in their classroom. Once I offer something to a network of people I can start creating alliances and resources that I may not have had without my willingness to help them. I feel more comfortable in my abilities to undertake tasks that may appear daunting when I first see them, because in reality everything with a little work can be handled!

How will we teach Professor Boyer’s daughter???

Think about the classroom we hope to be in and conveniently
Constructionist pedagogy: individual learners construct mental models to understand the world around them------ seymore papert ( discovered this theory)

This was an incredibly helpful class. I am no longer an education major and there are things I learned in this class that I never even knew about. Not just that I didn’t learn about it yet, but the mere idea that these programs existed was beyond my thinking. It makes me thirsty to learn MORE and MORE! Technology is so present, and it is so helpful to use. I feel comfortable exploring the internet. I feel comfortable using programs I never thought I could. Professor Boyer is an incredibly helpful teacher. I want to know everything he knows about technology. Imagine if I had his skills and put it towards whatever I choose to pursue. It would be an explosion of BRILLIANCE!!!

Kindle or I pad:
Kindles: lighter, less eye fatigue, dramatically less expensive, lots of books, more like a book
i-pad : heavy, apps, backlit, Amazon kindle books, internet, no camera, expensive

homework:

screencast: dont make it too large

be careful it doesnt sound scratchy( turn down volume of microphone)
review subpage to know what a good one looks like.

How would we integrate technology in Ella's Classroom)

Three ways to integrate technology in the class that Ella ( professor Boyer's daughter) is in.

My ideal classroom is 5th graders in southeastern Wisconsin community. We have heavy acsess to smart boards and computers.
1) I would use the smart board with a presentation where they have to put the states in their propper locations and match the capitals to the propper states.
2)  I would have a daily wiki page that would tell the students what they are going to do in class. It also has their homework assignments at the end. It is a private wiki page for the students.
3) I would have a daily blog for the parents ( a lot of cut and pasting from the wiki page) that has the homework assignments and a general outline of the day.
4) Have a classroom Personal Learning Network. The students will then also have a personal learning network with a link to mine. This network is connected to the wiki as well.
5) use google docs for a classroom forum about daily news for social studies.

  • How much effort did you exert designing and creating the iRLO?

  • How does designing and sharing an iRLO impact your future teaching?

  • This was by far the hardest of all the assignments this semester ( this and ...well keeping up with blog posting, while still having something different to say for everything). This took at least  hours when I first made it. The alterations were not as hard, because I had the basic done and not many things to fix. I altered where the characters started, and some of the questions. Probably the hardest thing for me to figure out was how to appropriately move my project forward from step to step.  I also struggled with actually creating a unique idea for an iRLO. I decided on having students sort objects so they can better understand that an object can have more than one attribute. I had to look at the standards to figure this part out, but that is what I would recommend to figure out how to best think of an idea. Once again I was happy with the outcome of my assignment, and after I finished this project, I had the biggest sigh of relief and feeling of success.

  • This helps me to reflect on all the information that my students will have to learn. There is a lot of things that we have to help them be successful at, and any way that can best help them should be used. For many students this may be playing video games. That is why this project was so great! I can now create video game that my peers and I can use for our students to help them succeed.
  • PSA reflection

    web safety PSA

    • How much effort did you exert planning and producing the PSA?
    • How does creating and sharing a digital storytelling PSA with your peers impact your future teaching?

Christine is one of the best partners I have ever had for a project. We have similar ideas, but different enough that we can do some serious brainstorming. So the actual idea for our PSA did not take long. the actual effort came with filming the PSA. we had my camera, but it ended up not being able to upload. Luckily my camera died half way through filming, so the rest of it was filmed on my computer.  The next task came with putting it all together. I have never used i-movie before, and I did not know what to expect. It was hard to start out, but once we figured out how to put in a video clip it was a lot easier. This process probably took a total of an hour of actually putting it together with sound. We had trouble picking out music for it, because we did not want to deal with copyright laws so we had to keep each clip under 30 seconds. the morphing of them wasn't hard and we wanted the abrupt sound of the alarm to signal the dangerousness of sharing your information online. Unfortunately, I did not notice till when I was writing the reflection that the very end of our PSA had some voices that were not supposed to be there. We could not hear it when we were putting the PSA together because we were working in the library and the sound was not high enough. But that is ok. Overall, I am extremely happy with the outcome of this PSA.

This project has opened doors for me. I have faith in myself for my ability to use technology. The obstacles I had I was able to quickly overcome by simply googling the answer. This gives me faith in all future pursuits I will have. My making a video for my peers really helped to show how I can influence people in my working community. By doing blogs, or vlogs, or videos, or any thing, my comrades can use what I have learned to help better their teaching, or I can use  their knowledge to better mine. I think this would be something great to use in a classroom environment as well. being able to use my peers videos to help teach my students how to properly act while using technology is Great.

    week thirteen lab exit slip

Exit slip December 2nd week thirteen lab
Brief video put together by a teacher. (Take notes/ observe about how she integrates technology)
    ·         French emersion teacher
    ·         Classroom becomes an exciting place to learn and active participants
    ·         Originally traditional
    ·         Smart board to actively encourage student participation and engage in cooperative learning activities
    ·         Online collaborative projects to learn from other students across the world
    ·         Computers used everywhere
    ·         Open educator with Daily blog and assignments online
    o   Parents appreciate it
o   Students stay updated on class
    ·         Students write blogs about current events and classroom activities
    o   Motivated to write
    o   Active members of society
    ·         More collaborative, open educated environment
Think about how this could be done before vs. how it couldn’t be done vs. could do better

Discussed 7 brilliant things teachers do with technology and 7 stupid mistakes teachers make with technology: I was number 7 on both of them… JIGSAW STYLE!!!! ( you are responsible for a small part, but you benefit from the whole group)
    -          Split 1 to 7. research. Split into ABC. Discuss. Get into your letter group and share

This class was really interesting in the application of all the cumulative information we have learned this year.  I like learning about the jigsaw. This is an interesting technique for cooperative learning. Have computers all against the wall with the screens pointing out so you can see all their screens. There are tools available so you can see students screen. Technology is NOT going away…. Using it will just make a good teacher better.  Also… Valuable information should be stored in 3 separate areas! Look over cool tools to get cool activities! Delicious all the cool tools. This was a great class. Interesting to sit through. The video helped me to reflect actual use of information that we learned in class. Teachers should not think about what they don’t have, instead they should take the initiative to go after it for their class. APPLY FOR GRANTS! Oscar Neale fellowship gives money to local Wisconsin teachers! Not very competitive. $10000 for give away!

homework. iRLO and PSA due next week. iRLO in dropbox ( make sure to put in required comments). PSA need a link to video on PSA page. don't forget to continue working on wiki page. screen cast is the last thing to do for this class. wiki page needs to be complete before. DELICIOUS IS DUE NEXT WEEK!!!! ( 65 Resources Minimum)
