What may be lost:
- We used to believe If we split off into "cultural-zones" citizenship and social cohesion will be undermined.
- public schools must "Americanize" the diverse peoples. Therefore we push for vouchers and charter schools in an effort to let parents take control of their children's education.
- schools have been the access to america mainstream
- education is how students "Get Ahead" is what parents believe.
- disparity between college and non college education
- Potential decline of liberal arts as colleges become more centered on the individual s
- will people become less well rounded.
- Will people become isolated because they are sitting around their computers interacting with less people socially?
- Summary
- equity issues increasing with penetration of technology into schools
- elites are buying their children resources to give them the edge in school
- state has to now distribute resources more fairly among their towns and cities.
What May Be Gained
- Learning will be more engaging
- customize education to particular students need and abilities
- access knowledge anytime
- as education becomes more tailored to peoples interests and abilities, the kind of competition between students found in school will likely diminish
What Will I take away from this as a future teacher:
When doing projects with my students I will try as much as I can to have them use computers during class time so they don't have to worry about working on it as much at home. Assignments done at home will be ones they can do on paper or type if they so choose. I will encourage students to learn more about their interests so that they stay involved in school. And as much as I know I am supposed to "Americanize" them, I would like to make sure they understand where they all came from. I would love to have guest speakers come into the classroom to talk about all their different heritages so the students understand the variety we have in the classroom.
